Varicose Veins Q & A

What causes varicose veins?

Veins return blood to your heart after it circulates through the body. They feature one-way valves to keep blood flowing in just one direction. These valves, however, can stop functioning the way they should, allowing your blood to flow backward, pooling in the vein and causing varicosity.

How do I know if I have varicose veins?

Varicose veins look puffy and swollen. You can see and feel them beneath your skin. They look like twisted cords and appear most frequently on the calves, ankles, and inside of your legs.

Oftentimes, varicose veins cause no symptoms except for cosmetic concerns. But some people do experience the following unpleasant side effects:

  • Aching
  • Throbbing
  • Cramping
  • Swelling
  • Leg heaviness and fatigue

If you suffer discomfort due to varicose veins, treatment is a must to relieve minor discomfort associated with the veins. You may also seek treatment because clogs can occur in the veins, resulting in a blood clot. You may also develop open wounds around the veins that won’t heal.  But, even if you’re bothered by the cosmetic aspects of the veins, the team at Laser & Varicose Vein Treatment Center can help.

Why did I develop varicose veins?

Anyone can develop varicose veins, but some people are more at risk. These risk factors include:

  • Older age
  • Obesity
  • Pregnancy
  • Family history of varicose veins
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Excessive sun exposure

Men are more likely to acquire varicose veins than women. You can try to reduce your risk of developing varicose veins by exercising regularly, eating a healthy diet, avoiding long periods of standing or sitting, and elevating your legs.

How are varicose veins treated?

Lifestyle changes, such as weight loss, can often ease pain associated with varicose veins. Dr. Haq and Dr. Samant may also recommend that you regularly wear compression stockings to ease pressure on the veins.

If conservative treatments don’t help, the doctors at Laser & Varicose Vein Treatment Center may recommend sclerotherapy or endovenous laser therapy. Sclerotherapy involves injecting a solution into the varicose veins. The solution causes the veins to collapse and fade away. Blood redirects to healthier, better-functioning veins.

Endovenous laser therapy targets varicose veins with a laser probe, inserted using ultrasound guidance. The laser energy damages the walls of offending veins, ultimately destroying them.
