Sclerotherapy vs. Laser Treatment: Which Vein Option Is Right for You?

Sclerotherapy vs. Laser Treatment: Which Vein Option Is Right for You?

Bulging, visible veins are very common, and they tend to become even more prevalent and noticeable as you age. Hormonal shifts, weight gain, genetics, and normal wear and tear take a toll on your veins, interfering with normal circulation and leading to an uptick in visible spider veins and varicose veins.

While these veins don’t always represent a serious medical issue, they’re a sign that your circulation is compromised in some way — and they can take a toll on your appearance and your confidence. When larger veins or clusters of smaller veins are affected, you can wind up with uncomfortable symptoms like cramping, aching, or limb fatigue.

Fortunately, we have effective solutions at Laser & Varicose Vein Treatment Center. Our skilled providers — Inam Haq, MD, FACS, and Sushilkumar Samant, MD, FACS — offer a variety of varicose vein treatments and spider vein treatments that restore healthy circulation.

In this post, learn about two options — sclerotherapy and laser vein treatment — and how to tell which option might be a better choice for you.

How sclerotherapy works

Doctors have used sclerotherapy to treat damaged veins for decades, and it remains one of the most effective treatments for smaller veins, including tiny varicose veins and spider veins. During treatment, we numb your skin and then inject a special chemical solution directly into the damaged vein.

The solution irritates the vein’s lining, causing the vein to shrink and collapse. Over time, your body absorbs the vein material, leaving your skin looking clearer while eliminating symptoms like cramps or itching.

Performed on an outpatient basis, most sclerotherapy procedures take well under an hour, and there’s little to no downtime. Afterward, you might have some mild redness or bruising in the area, but you can resume most activities the same day. Depending on your needs, we can treat a single vein or a cluster of tiny veins in one visit.

Understanding laser vein treatment

Laser vein treatment also eradicates the damaged vein, but it uses laser energy instead of chemical injections. When gently applied to the inside walls of the vein, laser energy heats the vein, causing it to shrink and collapse.

Like sclerotherapy, treatment begins by numbing your skin. Next, we make a tiny incision into the damaged vein and use the incision to insert a very thin laser fiber. The fiber emits laser energy as heat. As we move the fiber through the vein, heat seals the vein and prevents blood flow. Instead, your body routes blood through neighboring healthy veins.

Laser vein treatment is typically a better choice for varicose veins and even some larger spider veins, and people with underlying circulation issues — like chronic venous insufficiency — often choose this option. Like sclerotherapy, laser treatment improves the appearance of your skin while relieving symptoms like cramping, limb heaviness, swelling, and chronic aching.

Laser vein treatment is minimally invasive, and recovery is typically fairly rapid — much faster than with traditional vein-stripping surgery. In most cases, you can expect to resume regular activities within a day or two.

Choosing the right treatment

Vein size is a major factor that helps determine which treatment option is better for your needs, but we take other factors into consideration. Before recommending a treatment approach, we perform a comprehensive examination, reviewing your symptoms, your health history, and your lifestyle.

Some people benefit from a combination of both treatments: laser treatment to address larger veins and underlying vascular concerns, and sclerotherapy to target tiny veins and improve your skin’s appearance.

Regardless of which option we recommend, we also provide you with education and guidance to help reduce your risk of problematic veins in the future. Depending on your lifestyle, that might include losing extra weight, increasing physical activity, quitting smoking, or wearing compression stockings.
