Laser Vein Treatments Q & A

When are laser vein treatments recommended?

Laser vein treatments are a minimally invasive solution to varicose and spider veins. Since varicose and spider veins cause cosmetic concerns as well as issues with leg pain, itching, swelling, and discomfort, the team at Laser & Varicose Vein Treatment Center recommends laser vein treatments for anyone who dislikes the appearance of their varicose or spider veins or wants relief from the associated discomfort.

What are the benefits of laser vein treatments?

Laser vein treatments can be performed in the office in under an hour and don’t have the same side effects or lengthy recovery period as alternative procedures, like vein stripping. In most cases, the only reported side effects are mild tenderness and redness at the treatment site for about a day after treatment.

How does laser treatment affect my veins?

The goal of laser treatment is to break down the walls of the affected veins so that the veins collapse and then are absorbed by your body and processed as waste products. This prevents varicose veins from returning in the same area and allows your body to naturally reroute blood flow to healthy veins in your legs.

At the Laser & Varicose Vein Treatment Center, the team uses the Dornier D940 laser and Laser Fiber Protection System (LPS), the best laser technology available for the treatment of varicose and spider veins.

The D940 laser emits light energy that penetrates your skin without discomfort and is absorbed by the walls of your vein, gently heating them until they collapse. This laser also reduces the risk of skin discoloration, which can happen with other lasers.

What can I expect during laser vein treatment?

During your laser vein treatment, your doctor first injects your skin with a numbing solution, then cleans your skin thoroughly with antiseptic. When you’re ready, your doctor inserts a thin laser fiber into the affected vein using ultrasound visualization for precise placement.

The laser is turned on and gently heats the wire, which you won’t feel. This is repeated throughout the length of the affected vein. Once complete, the fiber is removed and your leg is bandaged and wrapped with a compression dressing. You’re encouraged to begin walking immediately afterward.
