Varicose Vein Removal Q & A

What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins are veins that have valves that fail to push blood back to the heart. The blood pools in the vein and causes swelling and discoloration visible underneath the skin. Varicose veins are unsightly, plus they can cause burning, leg heaviness, and pain. In severe cases, the varicose veins can ulcerate and leave you with bleeding sores.

What is involved in varicose vein removal?

Varicose vein removal seeks to alleviate the pain associated with varicose veins. The removal also smooths out your skin and reduces the appearance of the puffy, blue veins. When the offending veins are removed, your body redirects blood flow to healthier veins so your circulation improves, too.

How are varicose veins treated?

For small varicose veins, the doctors may recommend sclerotherapy. This procedure involves injecting a solution into the vein, which causes it to collapse and die. It then fades away, and you get clearer skin and relief.

For larger varicose veins, Dr. Haq and Dr. Samant may recommend laser therapy. This involves inserting a laser fiber into offending veins and directing heat energy to destroy the vein.

What should I expect during laser varicose vein removal?

At Laser & Varicose Vein Treatment Center, Dr. Haq and Dr. Samant use the FDA-cleared endoluminal laser ablation of the greater saphenous vein procedure. This one-time, minimally invasive therapy is highly effective in eliminating varicose veins and has very few — if any — side effects.

During the procedure, the doctors anesthetize the areas of your leg to be treated and place a thin laser fiber into the affected vein. Dr. Haq or Dr. Samant deliver laser energy via the fiber to the vein. The heat damages the vein, causing it to eventually collapse. Once the energy has been applied, the doctors remove the fiber and place a compression bandage over your leg. The entire process takes about 45 minutes.

Normal activities apart from strenuous exercise and walking are encouraged following the procedure.
