Why Fall Is the Perfect Time for Varicose Vein Removal

Why Fall Is the Perfect Time for Varicose Vein Removal

About a third of Americans suffer from varicose veins, twisted, purplish veins that can cause pain, itching, burning, or other uncomfortable symptoms. Fortunately, there are many treatment options for these pesky, unsightly veins.

Inam Haq, MD, FACS, and Sushilkumar Samant, MD, FACS, have extensive experience treating varicose veins at Laser & Varicose Vein Treatment Center, using the most advanced methods tailored to each patient’s unique needs. In this post, learn five reasons why fall can be the perfect time for varicose vein removal.

1. Your legs are covered

Summer’s warm weather calls for shorts, skirts, and bathing suits — clothing that exposes your legs. The problem is that varicose vein surgery often leaves bruising or discoloration afterward — before your body has a chance to completely heal.

The cooler weather in fall means you can wear long pants and skirts that look seasonally appropriate and also hide your legs during the few weeks that they need to recover from varicose vein removal.

2. It’s easier to avoid the sun

After varicose vein treatment, you need to protect the targeted area from the sun to avoid irritation that can interfere with healing. The longer pants and skirts of autumn make this task a lot easier — and so does the cooler weather.

While hot summer days are ideal for hitting the beach or relaxing at a park or pool, the cool fall is an ideal time to stay indoors and avoid overexposure to the sun. Plus, the sun is lower in the sky and its rays are less intense, which means even if you do show a little leg, the sun’s effects won’t be so severe.

3. You can modify your activity

Recovering from varicose vein treatment also means you need to take it easy for a while. You can still do regular daily activities, but you should avoid longer periods of activity or activities that put a lot of strain on your legs, like hiking and heavy lifting.

Depending on what your favorite summer hobbies may be, it’s not always easy to downshift during what tends to be the most active season of the year. During fall, it’s a lot easier — and more enjoyable — to spend some time snuggling on the couch with a book, movie, or TV series while your legs heal.

4. Recovery is more comfortable

After treatment, our team may advise you to wear compression stockings or socks. You may already know that these garments can be helpful for preventing varicose veins or reducing symptoms, but they also help speed healing following surgery.

Compression socks are made of elastic materials that literally help compress your veins and the surrounding tissue. They’re also notoriously warm, making them a little uncomfortable for summer wear. And of course, summer clothing makes them visible.

Fall’s cooler weather perfectly solves both those issues: Longer pants and skirts help hide compression socks while also reducing the heat factor, so you’re more comfortable during healing and recovery.

5. You’ll be ready for the holidays (and for next spring)

Recovery from varicose vein removal typically takes a few weeks, and undergoing treatment now means it won’t interfere with your busy holiday schedule. It also means your smoother legs will be ready to flaunt at your holiday parties and gatherings.

And of course, fall treatment gives your legs plenty of time to recover long before spring rolls around again, so your legs will be beach-ready even before you are.

Varicose vein treatment for better vein health

There’s no denying that varicose vein removal can help you look your best, but treatment isn’t all about aesthetics. Varicose veins are malfunctioning blood vessels, and that means they can interfere with normal circulation. Treatment reroutes blood to healthy veins, improving your skin’s appearance while also supporting better circulation.
